Meet the teacher behind Nakuru’s Gilgil Hills State House performances

Teacher Joseph Karani who's historic work in music and drama has made students from Gilgil Hills School in Nakuru County grace the lawns of State House, Nairobi.

For three consecutive years, students from Gilgil Hills School in Nakuru County have graced the lawns of State House, Nairobi, not by coincidence, but through the tireless mentorship of one passionate teacher: Joseph Karani.

Karani, who teaches Creative Arts and Sports and serves as the school’s chaplain, has become a symbol of dedication and creativity in Kenya’s education sector. Historic work in music and drama has transformed learners into confident performers whose talent continues to earn national recognition.

Behind the students’ flawless stage acts lies Karani’s disciplined coaching, spiritual guidance, and insistence on excellence. His approach combines faith, artistry, and mentorship, a blend that has resonated deeply with pupils and parents alike.

“We don’t just train to win. We train to inspire. Every child has a unique gift, and my role is to help them find their voice through music and drama,”said Karani.

The teacher’s outstanding results have drawn admiration from the Gilgil Hills School community, with parents and colleagues describing him as a rare educator whose influence extends far beyond the classroom.

The school management praised him for his consistency and moral leadership, noting that his work has helped position Gilgil Hills as one of the country’s top-performing schools in co-curricular activities.
