Picture a world where cars run on solar power, decreasing pollution and reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. At the Nyeri National Polytechnic, this futuristic dream is turning into a reality.

Dennis Muthoni, is a driven aspiring Engineer who has developed a solar-powered smart car and a digital accident controller.

Through his groundbreaking creation, Dennis is revolutionizing transportation and empowering a greener, safer tomorrow.

The smart car, fitted with state-of-the-art solar panels, harnesses the power of the sun to run leaving behind a significantly negligible carbon footprint.

“Driven by concern for the environment and the financial burden faced by many Kenyans, we wanted to revolutionize transportation and provide an eco-friendly alternative that reduces carbon emissions while saving individuals significant amounts of money on fuel expenses,” he said.

He added that the car has a range of 100 kilometers when fully charged and a maximum speed of 60 km/h.

“The solar-powered car has solar panels that collect rays from the sun and converts them into electronic energy which is then stored in the batteries and used to drive the car,” he said.

In addition to the car, Vitrine Wambui, another student has created a digital accident controller which will help to reduce accidents around sharp corners.

By targeting blind spots, the device utilizes a pressure sensor to send an alert to drivers on the opposite side via illuminating bulbs, effectively warning them of potential danger thus significantly reducing the risk of collisions.

“By employing innovative technology, this device acts as a crucial safeguard, especially at blind spots, with its pressure sensor and alert system. By providing real-time warnings and improving situational awareness, we believe that the digital accident controller has the potential to significantly reduce accidents on our roads and save countless lives,” she said.

The students’ passion, dedication and drive to make a positive change have resulted in the remarkable inventions that have the potential to revolutionize transportation in Kenya and inspire similar advancements worldwide.

Wambui added that if the government through the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) embraces these innovative solutions, they will help in improving road safety.

“This year alone, there have been an alarming number of road accidents which have claimed numerous lives. By embracing these inventions, NTSA can make a significant impact in reducing road accidents,” she said.
