MCA casts doubt on CBC implementation progress

CBC implementation

The Elgeyo Marakwet County Assembly Education Committee has criticized the implementation of Competency-Based Curriculum saying it is heading in the wrong direction.

Addressing the media in Iten, the Committee Chairperson and Emsoo Ward MCA Christopher Cheboiboch casted doubt on the implementation progress of the new curriculum saying the government seems not to have a clear plan to see the programme materialize.

“All is not well with the implementation of CBC. It is in total mess. Public schools lack enough resources and infrastructure for effective transition to the skill-based curriculum. This thing was hurriedly done without following due process,” he said.

Singling out slow disbursement of JSS textbooks and few teachers, he said the government has showed lack of commitment adding that the State is deliberately wasting learners’ time in schools.

“Schools have no textbooks, one teacher or none. Learners go to school and come home untaught. Parents are not happy seeing their children not taught. CS Machogu should visit these schools to ascertain the reality,” he remarked.

Cheboiboch said the future of the learners currently under the curriculum hang in the balance if corrective measures are not put in place to implement it in a way that would benefit the education sector.

The MCA who doubles as the Chair of private schools in the county called on Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu to tour schools so as to capture the reality on the ground.
