The teaching fraternity in Embu County has been thrown into mourning after the principal of Maviani Secondary School in Karaba zone, Julius Mulei, developed breathing complications and died early Sunday morning.

Mulei had on Saturday evening checked into a popular entertainment joint in Gategi market before retiring to bed in the same area. He was rushed to White Rose Medical Centre, where he passed on while undergoing treatment.

Witnesses said the principal was in the company of a woman who alerted residents about the breathing complications leading to the concerted efforts to save his life.

Riakanau senior chief location Kimeu Musyimi said the principal had spent the night at his rented house at Gategi market where he used to sleep during rainy seasons when the road to his home would become impassable.

Mbeere South Sub County Police Commander Gregory Mutiso said he had dispatched officers to the scene to investigate the events surrounding the death.

Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) Embu branch Executive Secretary Jacob Karuraa said the deceased had an industrious teaching career. Mulei was a teacher of English and literature.

“He taught at Bonzuki, Bondoni and Maviani. At Bonzuki, he served as a games master and later as a zonal co-coordinator for the Western zone in Mbeere South. At Bondoni, he was promoted to the position of a deputy principal.

“In 2015, he was promoted to the position of principal at Maviani secondary, a position he held till his demise,” stated Karuraa in a forum for Embu teachers.

Karuraa eulogized the late as a successful manager and a team player, “attributes which made the school to become popular”.

According to Karuraa, the deceased is survived by a wife and three children.
