Matuu Girls High School has barred some three students from leaving after completing their KCSE, the reason being they owe the school some money.
And the parents are infuriated; speaking to the media yesterday, they said the principal refused to release the girls, leaving them stranded at the school gate with their belongings, prompting the intervention of the area chief.
“My daughter has been a student here for four years, and now that she’s done with her exams, I can’t take her home because of the balance,” lamented one parent. “I traveled a long distance to pick her up and pleaded with the school to let me clear the balance later, but they declined.”

Another parent emphasized they were not refusing to pay but requested more time to settle the balance, expressing frustration over the school’s stance, stating: “I will eventually clear the balance; I just need time.”
KCSE candidates doing Biology finished their exams yesterday. The rest with different combinations are winding up next week.
But attempts to get a comment from the school administration were unsuccessful as they declined to address the media.

Stephen Kavuvu, KESSHA Chair for Machakos Branch, when contacted confirmed that the students owed the school some money. However, Yatta Sub-County Director of Education Miriam Mbithuka dismissed the claims, describing them as propaganda.
“That is not true. Exams are still ongoing,” she stated in a phone interview with Education News.
