Masinde Muliro’s Webuye Campus set to reopen after 5-year closure

Masinde Muliro University in Kakamega. Its Webuye Campus is se to reopen next month after a five-year hiatus.

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), Webuye Campus, is set to reopen next month after being closed for five years.

The campus will prioritize offering Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) courses.

This decision to reopen the campus resulted from a strategic agreement between the university’s management and Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka.

Under the newly signed agreement, Bungoma County has leased the university campus for a duration of 99 years.

James Sakwa, the representative for MMUST, disclosed that the university’s board had decided to offer only TVET programmes at the campus.

The institution, operating with a level of semi-autonomy, will provide a variety of distinctive diploma programmes, including specialized training in pedagogy, and the art and science of teaching.

The campus will launch programmes that acknowledge prior learning, an important innovation designed to boost skills development in the region.

MMUST closed four of its campuses due to financial challenges following meetings held by the university’s board in December 2020 and January 12, 2021.

The university also mentioned the need for improved and higher-quality education as one of the reasons for closing the campuses in question.

The institution subsequently reassigned lecturers and staff to ensure that quality education continued at its remaining branches.

Students from the closed campuses were instructed to go to the main campus in Kakamega, where they were then assigned to the operational campuses.

The action by MMUST followed discussions between senior Ministry of Education officials and university leaders from across the country regarding inadequate funding from the national government, which had left many higher education institutions financially strained.
