The police have started an investigation into the cause of death of a university student in Kisii County. Joseph Kaiser’s body was found in a house at Mentinkwa shopping centre at the outskirts of Kisii town on Wednesday morning.

According to his mother, Josephine Ondeyo, her son, who was a Law student at Maseno University until his death, had asked her for the semester’s money, and she sent it to him the previous day, but only to receive sad news the next day that her son had died.

“”I sent money and expected him to call back and acknowledge its receipt as usual, but this time round he did not call back,” she said.

After receiving a report about the death, Kisii Central police launched an investigation whose preliminaries showed that the student committed suicide by self-poisoning.

Sources at Mentinkwa town briefed that the victim took his life after losing the money that was meant for his school in a bet with a gambling company in the country.

Residents of their rural home in Rogongo village, Nyamache Sub-county, described the deceased as a bright and disciplined youth. They wondered how he reached the unfortunate decision of taking his life.

They said that his death disappointed his widowed mother, who moved from their Rogongo home and settled at Menyinkwa shopping centre, where she sold vegetables to raise money to educate her son and other children.

Kisii-based pastor called Obed Nyabuto associated the death with the prevailing challenging financial conditions that cause people to have mental fatigue, leading them to decide to take their lives.

He appealed to communities to open up to one another and share their problems and find solutions for them instead of resorting to killing themselves.

““Such deaths place immense pressure on parents and cause deep trauma to siblings, adversely affecting their well-being,” he said.

The body of the deceased was taken to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary for postmortem and plans for burial.
