Bugema University football team celebrate a win in the East African University Games at Ndejje University after securing a 1:0 win against The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU).

Maseno University is slated to host the 13th Edition of the East African University Games, which are planned to take place from the 16th to the 20th of December this year.

The event will feature a variety of competitions such as outdoor sports like football, rugby, netball, volleyball, hockey, and others, as well as indoor activities including chess, badminton, and scrabble, among others.

A delegates meeting took place at Maseno University on May 22, 2024, with attendance from the leaders of the Federation of Eastern Africa University Sports. The meeting saw representation from twenty-three universities within the East Africa Community, including Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Kenya.

The primary purpose of the meeting was to deliberate on the upcoming games scheduled for December 16-20 at Maseno University, as well as to inspect the facilities to be utilized for the competitions.

The discussion covered a range of topics, such as general entries, deposit payments for the games, team sports announcements, selections and draws, the final technical delegates meeting, and the publication of the final general program and fixtures.

Additionally, they talked about the pre-games symposium, deadlines for individual entries, final payments, as well as arrival, competition, and departure dates.

They highlighted several issues from past competitions to avoid, such as ensuring student eligibility with an age limit of 25, preventing the falsification of identification credentials, and prohibiting participation of post-graduate students.

Other challenges addressed were adhering to payment deadlines, observing the duration of each match, and aiming for university competitions to surpass the quality of high school sports events.

The delegates reviewed the Federation of Eastern Africa University Sports handbook, which outlines the roles, rules, and regulations, along with the associated consequences for various games.

Prof. Julius O. Nyabundi, the Vice Chancellor of Maseno University, expressed gratitude to the Federation for selecting Maseno University as the venue for the Heads of Delegation meetings and the 13th federation sports competition.

He proposed that the secretariat meetings be permanently relocated to Maseno University and reassured the delegates of the institution’s ample facilities and quality accommodation for participants. He also mentioned that the sports events would facilitate the sharing of experiences and further the development of talent.

The inaugural edition of the games in 1999 was held at Egerton University. Kenyatta University hosted the 2004 edition. It also hosted the 10th All Africa Games in 2022.

Ndejje University in Uganda was the host for the 12th Edition of the games in December 2022, where they also triumphed as the overall winner, securing an impressive total of 59 gold medals. Makerere University came in second with a tally of 21 gold medals, and Makerere Business School secured third place with 15 gold medals.
