Maseno University has announced a new policy requiring all students to register for the Social Health Insurance (SHA) scheme before accessing medical services at the institution’s clinic.
In an official memo issued by the Directorate of Student Affairs, the university directed that compliance with the SHA programme is now a prerequisite for treatment.
The notice, signed by Director of Student Affairs Prof. Peter Oracha, emphasizes that the move is aimed at facilitating smooth referrals to public healthcare facilities.
According to the statement, students who fall ill and require specialized care will be referred to major public hospitals such as Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital and Kisumu County Referral Hospital.
However, only those registered under the SHA scheme will be eligible for such services.

The memo clearly states that SHA compliance is “a mandatory requirement for commencement of treatment,” signaling a significant shift in how student healthcare will be managed at the university.
This directive aligns with broader national efforts to streamline healthcare access through structured insurance programmes.
By enforcing SHA registration, the university aims to ensure students receive timely and affordable medical care, both on campus and at referral facilities.
Students are now expected to promptly enroll in the scheme to avoid disruptions in accessing healthcare services.
The university officials have urged all students to treat the matter with urgency, noting that failure to comply may result in denial of medical services at the university clinic.
