Maranda High School closed indefinitely

Maranda high school has been closed indefinitely following yesterday’s fire outbreak at one of the school’s twin dormitories.

The decision to close down the school was reached after a Ministry of Education meeting allowed the school management to repair the dormitory that was razed down on Sunday night.

Siaya County Director of Education Mr. Nelson Sifuna revealed that six students have been arrested and taken to custody for questioning at Bondo Sub-county Police Station in connection to the fire incident.

“Six students are currently being questioned over their involvement in last night’s fire. We are also going to question the security officers who are supposed to man the building to access if they are culpable,” Sifuna told Education Newspaper.

Sifuna confirmed that no student was injured although the form fours who reside in the dormitory lost all their personal belongings.

He called for calm among all stakeholders to allow the school to reorganize itself, adding that the students will soon be recalled once proper arrangements have been made.

The director stated that the extent of the damage at the dormitory is yet to be established and therefore the amount that each student will be expected to pay could not immediately be determined.

He urged all the principals in the county to be alert and vigilant to avoid such incidence in their schools.

“This is a wakeup call to schools in the county. All principals must now be vigilant to avert such incidence from occurring in their institutions,” said the County Education Director.
