Maranda dormitory fire suspects released on free bond

By Erick Nyayiera

The six students of Maranda High school, who had been in police custody after they were linked to the fire incident in the institution, have finally been released on free bond.

This follows a successful application for the review of the detention order by the accused students’ lawyer Felix Okech.

On Tuesday this week, Bondo Resident Magistrate’s court had ordered that the students be detained for 14 days at the Bondo police station to give time for the completion of investigations into the Sunday night fire incident that destroyed a twin dormitory at the school.

However, lawyer Felix Okech argued that the continued detention of the students without a formal charge was a violation of their fundamental right to liberty.

He equally stated that Article 53 of the constitution of Kenya provides for the detention of children or juveniles as a measure of last resort.

Bondo Resident Magistrate Stella Mathenge released the students on  free bond and set a mention date for the case on 23rd November 2021.
