A 33-year-old man was electrocuted as he allegedly illegally tried to reconnect power to a school in North Kamagambo, Rongo Sub County.
The deceased had reportedly been contracted by Kameji Secondary School to reconnect electricity in the school after the Kenya Power and Lighting Company disconnected it due to unpaid bills by the school.
After the incident locals demanded action for those culpable in the incident.
According to the area chief John Agoro, the electrocuted man was of trying to reconnect a power line that had been disconnected by the KPLC weeks ago due to outstanding arrears owed to the company by the school.
Agoro confirmed that he had since been able to confirm that the deceased had been called to reconnect power.
“I received a call from the school principal at around 1:30pm notifying me that someone had been electrocuted on a power pole within the school compound,” said Agoro.
Family members and locals are now demanding justice for their relative. Led by William Oloo, the deceased man’s family has since condemned the incident, accusing the school of calling their relative to undertake a dangerous mission knowingly.
“We want the school to be held responsible for the death of our brother and for illegal connection,” said Oloo as some of the locals called on the government to probe the incident. \
Rongo sub county OCPD Peter Okiring said the body of the deceased had since been moved to Rosewood hospital mortuary awaiting for an autopsy as investigations into the matter continues.
He warned locals against illegal power connections saying they were risking their lives and breaking the law.
“I urged the public to shun illegal electricity connections which are very dangerous. Anyone found culpable in any illegal connections shall be arrested and dealt with according to the law,” said Okiring.
