Man arrested on way to vandalize, raze down school in Kakamega

Kabras Police officers in Malava sub-county have detained a man suspected to be part of a 7-man gang that invaded a school with intention to vandalize, steal and raze down Friends Shivanga Secondary School.

The middle-aged man was reportedly with his accomplices who managed to escape the dragnet after area chief Simon Nambwa acting on a tip-off from parents ambushed the suspects as they attempted to spring into action in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Some stakeholders allege that the Parents Association Chairman was behind the incident.

“Today morning I received information that the chairman in company of unknown people purported to be goons armed with crude weapons had come to the school. The area chief who was on the ground was able to apprehend the gang and the motive as to why the chairman decided to go rogue is still unclear,” an official said on condition of anonymity.

Shivanga location Chief Simon Namba confirmed the incident saying he rushed to the scene and found the culprits and while trying to interrogate them, one became violent and that is when they arrested him as he tried to escape.

He added that he identified the other accomplices who vanished. The arrested culprit revealed that they were hired by the Chairman, who has since gone missing, with a promise of Ksh500 payment after burning down the school.

“We found a litre of petrol in his possession and our efforts to search for the chairman is still fruitless but we will involve the DCI to track him down,” he said.

“I’m calling on parents to seek dialogue if anything is amiss with the management of the school rather than taking law into their own hands. Let’s be sober and engage relevant education stakeholders in solving any misunderstandings,” he appealed.

This follows a recent incident where Kuvasali High School students recently went on a rampage against their principal over bad leadership.
