Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Makau Malombe has officially launched the disbursement of the county’s Pro-Poor Fees Programme for the 2023/24 financial year.
Speaking to education stakeholders at his office compound, Malombe stated that his administration was keen to prioritize the education sector and they have increased the programme’s allocation from Ksh36 to Ksh86.4 million.
He regretted that many were suffering to educate their children, translating to poor academic performance and high rates of absenteeism in area schools.
“We must ensure every child gets the necessary support to complete their education and with minimal disruptions,” he said.
He said that the programme is intended to boost education access, retention and transition rates among students.
He assured residents that officers charged with allocation have done due diligence to ensure transparency and that only deserving students benefit.
Malombe noted that they registered 11,795 beneficiaries – 6,493 secondary students, 1,832 TVET students, 1,263 university students, 909 VTC trainees, 727 college students and 573 special needs learners.
“This year more focus has been given to trainees in vocational training centres where we have increased the allocation from Ksh5,000 to Ksh10,000 shillings per trainee. I implore more youth to enroll in our VTCs and gain technical skills and knowledge,” he said.
He urged the beneficiaries to take advantage of the opportunity and double their efforts in their studies.
