As the Kenya Science and Engineering Fair (KSEF) competitions concluded in Garissa High School, all eyes were set on the top-performing AIC Malivani junior school learners, who have continued putting Makueni on the national map since the 62nd edition started.
The two learners, Carlos Mumo and Charles Mwendwa, emerged in position 3/32 in a highly competitive agriculture category, their project being ‘solar powered automated irrigation system using moisture sensors’, shocking many even after they secured position 2/27 teams in regionals, proving that they can do even more.
Being the 1st time junior schools are competing in KSEF, the head of the institution, Joshua Mutuse, overwhelmed by joy, noted that the science patrons’ guidance, commitment and mentorship to the two learners deserved the win. The patrons, James Wambua and Solomon Musyoki, have not only led the boys to success but also planted an innovation seed that will germinate and contribute to the future of this nation.

“They won from subcounty, county, regionals and now nationals. We knew they would overwhelm us with joy, and for real, we are happy as a school. It calls for efforts from all of us to make their work easier. We offered our young scientists the support they needed from us, nurtured them, and here we are; they made us proud. These boys will go far,” Mutuse.
The patrons noted that they believed in the learners’ ideas, supported them and that through their dedication, creativity and resilience, they have exceeded expectations.
However, the county was represented by 4 junior schools in nationals, where Kathonzweni AIC secured position 11/32 and Nguumo JS took position 5/32 in energy and transportation, while Kari Mwailu JS secured position 7/32 in social and behavioural science.
