Malivani AIC learners shine in Eastern Regional KSEF Agriculture category

Carlos Mumo and Charles Mwendwa of Malivani AIC display their trophy with patrons James Wambua and Solomon Musyoki after KSEF Eastern regional competitions at Matuu Memorial Girls High School.
The two learners from Malivani AIC, Carlos Mumo and Charles Mwendwa, hold their trophy alongside their patrons, James Wambua and Solomon Musyoki, after the Eastern regional KSEF competitions at Matuu Memorial Girls High School.

As the Kenya Science and Engineering Fair (KSEF) Eastern regional level came to an end, Malivani AIC secured position two out of the 27 teams in the agriculture category from the seven counties that participated and position one in Makueni County Junior Secondary Schools (JSS).

Surprisingly, it was the first time junior schools participated in KSEF competitions. The school had initially won at the sub-county and county levels, securing a chance to participate in the regionals held at Matuu Memorial Girls’ High School.

“With two of our students, Carlos Mumo of Grade 9 South and Charles Mwendwa of Grade 9 North, they did the school proud. I am deeply grateful to their patron, James Wambua, and deputy patron, Solomon Musyoki, for their keen coaching of these students and for walking the journey with them. I can tell you it’s not easy, especially now that it was their first time in KSEF,” said School Head of Institution (HoI) Joshua Mutuse.

The two patrons, Wambua and Musyoki, noted that Competency-Based Education (CBE) was highly embraced across all categories in KSEF. They appreciated the HOI for enabling full support to the boys and girls when needed, adding that he made their work easier.

“Our project is a solar-powered automated irrigation system using soil moisture sensors and falls under the agriculture category. I am happy the two boys are heading to nationals. Apart from wins, the presentation gives them confidence even in their day-to-day life,” said Patron Wambua.

The projects in the highly competitive competition revolved around innovation, research, and practical solutions developed by junior and senior school learners. The projects were evaluated on originality, scientific methodology, relevance, and potential impact.
