Malava sub-county ball games begin in earnest

Dire consequences and legal action will be taken against schools found fielding non-students during the ongoing term two ball games, Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Chairman Zachariah Mulievi has warned.

“These are students’ games so let bonafide students play. We will be keen in scrutinizing players as per documentation and we will penalize forgeries. I call on the games teachers to ensure their teams adhere to this,” he said.

Mulievi was addressing teachers and players during the official opening of Malava sub-county ball games on Friday. The games will end on Sunday with the finals being held at Friends Malava Boys grounds.

“This competition has rules and coaches should adhere to them. If you were born before September 1, 2003 then you are not eligible, and if you were admitted in school after November 15, 2022, you are not allowed to participate due to the transfer window rules. This is to avoid poaching of players among schools and we only allow transfer of two from the same school in one season,” he said.

He asked teams to exercise high levels of discipline and abide by rules to avoid disqualification and called on fans to carry themselves with dignity.

“I want to congratulate all the teams who qualified for the finals, but from here we will only pick one team per event to proceed to the county level,” he said.

KSSSA area Secretary Levi Recha acknowledged the hard work of participating teams, noting that Rugby 7’s fame was fast-rising at the sub county level with more teams signing up.

“We are the only sub-county within the country that has embraced Rugby and last year we had 7 teams and we are expecting more this year and this is very exciting,” he said.

Recha noted that coaches will be required to take a photograph of their team before preliminary matches begin to ensure accountability in every match, adding that any form of cheating will attract a serious penalty.

“The association will only listen to teachers in the teams and not non-teachers who have been contracted as coaches to accord the games the decorum required.” He said.
