Plans to establish a Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) campus in Makuyu, Maragua Constituency, have entered the final stretch, with construction expected to begin once the ongoing tendering process is concluded.

The KSh400 million project, backed by the national government, is poised to transform healthcare training in Murang’a County and beyond.

The development gained momentum after the relocation of the local chief’s offices, which had occupied the land earmarked for the institution.

With the site now cleared, preparatory works are underway ahead of the groundbreaking. Maragua MP Mary Waithera confirmed that the government has already allocated KSh400 million for tuition blocks, while the local NG‑CDF will finance the administration block.

Speaking during the commissioning of the new chief’s offices, Waithera said all critical requirements, including designs and land documentation have been finalized.

“The tendering process for the contractor is currently underway. Once this is concluded, construction will begin immediately,” she assured.

The Makuyu campus will be the third KMTC branch in Murang’a County, joining existing facilities in Murang’a town and Kangema. It is projected to host about 3,000 students, significantly expanding access to medical and health‑related training opportunities. Waithera emphasized that the influx of students, lecturers, and support staff will stimulate local businesses, create jobs, and attract new investments.

“The establishment of this KMTC branch will revolutionise the economy of Makuyu. Traders, landlords, and service providers will benefit from increased population and economic activity associated with the institution,” she said.

Additionally, the Ministry of Housing will construct student hostels alongside a new affordable housing project in the neighbourhood. This integration, Waithera noted, aligns with the government’s broader agenda of expanding education, strengthening health training capacity, and promoting decent housing.

Local leaders and residents have welcomed the project, describing it as a game changer for Makuyu and the wider Maragua area. They expressed optimism that the campus will ease the burden on students who previously had to travel far to pursue medical training. Residents also expect improvements in social amenities, including roads, water, and electricity, as infrastructure is upgraded to support the growing population.

“With land secured, funding allocated, and designs ready, the Makuyu KMTC campus is firmly on course to become a key centre for medical training and a catalyst for socio‑economic transformation in the region,” Waithera concluded.
