Makueni schools in race to plant the quota of trees assigned them

AIC Malivani Primary School head teacher Joshua Mutuse and his pupils prepare to plant trees in the school compound. They were given a target of 2,000 trees.

Makueni schools have promised to continue planting and nurturing trees to maturity as a way of mitigating climate change and fulfilling their quota in the national challenge.

A spot check in the primary schools by Education News revealed that most schools in Makueni have planted trees in honour of the national drive towards the 15 billion target by 2032.

AIC Malivani Primary School head teacher Joshua Mutuse said they have been given a target of 2,000 trees and they have already planted 500 with 300 more planted during schools tree planting day.

“We have so many mature trees and sometimes we look at the older ones threatening to fall and we make firewood from it and keep on planting more,” Mutuse said.

In ACK Wote Township Primary School, Ruth Nditu, who is also KNUT Makueni Branch Treasurer, noted that they have already planted 20 types of fruit trees.

ACK Wote Township Primary School pupils led by their teacher Ruth Nditu show off their seedlings before the exercise. Their target is 4,000 trees.

“Our school is given a target of 4,000 trees. We are not planting trees for shade alone. We want our children to be able to learn and enjoy all types of trees,” Nditu said.

She added that the children are very passionate and each class will be allocated their section to nurture and conserve the grown trees.
