Makueni Constituency Member of Parliament Susan Kiamba has expressed her worry on the proposal to cancel feeding programme in schools saying this may do more harm such as increased dropouts in schools.

Speaking during the unveiling of the new bus at ACK Wote Township Primary and Junior Secondary School, she noted that food is basic and there should be no negotiations about it.

The law maker called upon parliamentarians to do away with these proposals which are squeezing the necks of the citizens. She noted that there are so many proposals including rising the price of basic commodities like bread.

“I understand we want to get out of debt but people don’t have to die to get out of the debts. Let’s lead with consciousness and strategise on how to clear the debt without making people suffer,” she said.

Her words were echoed by the Makueni ACK Diocese Bishop Francis Matoi who called upon the government not to withdraw the school feeding programme adding that it’s a major concern to the church and the public in large.

“Many learners come from poor backgrounds and the food provided in schools help in classroom concentration. Withdrawing it means many might drop out of schools,” said Matoi.

On capitation, she noted that it has been very erratic but the MPs are doing their best to push for it so that the government can release it at the right time.

She called for employment of Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers on Permanent and Pensionable terms.

“The government should stop the misguided priorities and take education seriously especially during this era we are dealing with the new curriculum. We want the teachers to get clear employment terms,” the MP added.

On bursaries, the MP called for parents to continue applying but ensure they don’t apply if they are capable of paying school fees for the needy to benefit.
