Following the recent monkeypox (Mpox) outbreak, Makueni Chief Officer of Health, Dr Harvey Mulei, confirmed that all health staff have been fully sensitised and are prepared to manage any Mpox cases.

Speaking in his office, Harvey called upon members of the public to visit the hospital if they have symptoms of blisters, adding that doctors will be able to tell whether they are an Mpox case.

Some of the signs and symptoms include rash, blisters on the skin, fever, Swollen Lymph Nodes, Chills, Headache, Muscle aches, and Fatigue.

“If you come with blisters that are suggestive of Mpox, we treat it as Mpox and isolate you as we try to find out you are really suffering from Mpox,” Harvey said.

He added that the Mombasa road stretch has been seriously affected with cases in the whole county totalling 67 as of November 18 this year.  Makueni has been ranked 4th after Busia (94 cases), Nairobi (122 cases), and Mombasa (343 cases).

People at high risk are hoteliers, health workers, long-distance truck drivers, and the public at large.

He called upon individuals to seek medical attention once they notice or suspect any sign or symptom of Mpox.

“You know, the disease is contagious, and most cases are from the busy Nairobi-Mombasa highway. We should stay alert at all times. We have been doing public awareness, and we will still continue doing so,” Harvey said.
