Makueni Boys’ high school chief Principal Raphael Diwani has said that they will continue holding students council elections under supervision of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
This is after the Commission successfully conducted the school’s fourth student council elections.
“This being the fourth year of IEBC conducting our elections, our students are well informed in terms of their democratic rights. We stopped picking leaders for them and started letting them choose their own leaders,” said Diwani.
He challenged the elected leaders to be prepared for the big task ahead of them since they have a role to play to ensure the school attains its targeted mean grade in the upcoming national examinations.

Makueni county IEBC Returning Officer Nicholas Kalimi said that the event was well organized and praised the students for maintaining peace during the elections.
“I understand in the past three years the school has conducted the students’ council elections under our watch. It’s a good move which should be emulated by other schools,” said Kalimi.
He said the school elections are done free of charge as part of the Commissions’ social responsibility. He called upon other schools to come on board adding that he hopes to conduct more of such elections.
“This is just a replica of what happens in real life. Let students practice their democratic rights from a young age till they become real voters in the national elections and beyond,” he added.
The school Deputy Principal Albert Musyimi noted that there were non-elective positions, those elected unopposed and the executive positions. He added that after the elections, the students leaders are inaugurated in a formal event.
