Makerere bans phones, drinks and others during 73rd graduation

Makerere University, one of the prestigious universities in the Sub Saharan continent, has banned phones, cameras as well as video cameras ahead of the 73rd graduation ceremony.

The Uganda-based university is expected to hold a five-day graduation ceremony starting on Monday, February 20 at the institution`s Freedom Square where a total of 13,221 students are expected to graduate.

Other items prohibited from the ceremony include; alcohol, cigarettes, canned foods, backpacks, lighters, glasses, knives and bottled drinks. So far no explanation has been given by the administration regarding the move.

“A detailed list of prohibited items has been inserted in the graduation invitation package that is presented to the graduands and invited guests,” Head of Ceremonies Committee Prof. Mangeni said in a statement.

Also, each graduand is expected to be accompanied with only two guests.

The First Lady of Uganda, Janet Kataha Museveni, who is also the Minister of Basic Education is expected to grace the ceremony and also University of London Vice Chancellor Prof. Wendy Thomson.
