More than half of Grade 9 learners, 51 per cent, have chosen STEM subjects as they prepare to transition to senior secondary schools, signaling a growing interest in science and technology. Social sciences attracted 38 per cent of learners, while arts and sports drew 11 per cent.
William Sugut, Head of the Directorate of Secondary Schools Education, said the Ministry of Education is committed to guiding every learner to their strengths and ensuring a smooth placement process.
“We expect STEM enrollment to rise even further in future cohorts as we continue to nurture talent across all streams,” he said.
The ministry has set up a structured placement system to simplify school selection. Each learner can now choose 12 schools: three from each of four clusters, with 9,623 schools organized to make the process straightforward. Placements will run concurrently across STEM, social sciences, arts, and sports.

Sugut urged heads of comprehensive schools to mentor students carefully, emphasizing that the ministry wants to tap into the unique talents of every learner. Grade 10 admissions into senior schools are scheduled to begin in January 2026.
On affordability, the ministry clarified that fees have not increased under the new senior school structure. Boarding schools will charge Ksh53,000, while school capitation remains at Ksh22,244, in line with the 2015 Gazette notice. Families were reassured that extra charges or demands by schools are not permitted.
To prepare for the transition, Ksh980 million has been allocated for retooling senior school teachers on the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system. “This investment ensures our teachers are ready to guide learners effectively into the new education era,” Sugut said.
The government remains steadfast in supporting the transition of Grade 9 learners, balancing affordability with quality learning, and preparing the country for a modernized, skills-focused education system.
