Magoha: It is time to resume face-to-face learning

By Staff Reporter

Appearing before the National Assembly Education Committee yesterday, Cabinet Secretary for Education Prof George Magoha said time is ripe for the resumption of physical learning.

However, the CS remained non-committal when he was asked to give precise dates for the possible reopening.

“I cannot give you a date but I assure you that the government is taking every measure into consideration, however, what we must ask ourselves is what is going to be different in January 2021,” Magoha told the committee.

The CS emphasized reopening earlier than January 2021 citing neighboring countries where learning has resumed for instance; Tanzania, Zambia, Burundi and Angola.

The CS hinted that the government plans to consider phased reopening with the candidates being the first to go back to school saying that maintaining the social distance rule among learners can only be achieved by fewer learners at a time.

“For schools, reopening should prioritize candidate classes (Standard 8 and Form 4) and the pioneer Competency-Based Curriculum cohort (Grade 4) to facilitate a smooth transition,” said the CS.

The CS told the committee that education stakeholders are closely monitoring the preparedness of various universities and colleges which were recently given green light to resume physical learning.

The push for the resumption of physical learning recently got support from KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion.

The CS, however, clarified that BOM teachers who are registered with the Teachers Service Commission have received their pay.
