A senior police officer has been gunned down and killed after he shot and wounded a magistrate at the Makadara Law Courts in Nairobi.

The Makadara Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti was shot in the court soon after she had delivered a ruling in a case involving the wife of the senior officer.

Police said the senior officer is an Officer Commanding Station in Londiani, Kericho County and was present at the case hearing where his wife was had been arraigned in court and wanted to be released pending a hearing and determination of the case.

The court was sitting in a tent outside the main court precincts as a result of lack of sufficient space inside the court room.

Confirming the incident, Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei revealed the slain detective went behind the tent and shot the magistrate.

“Other officers who were present responded and shot the officer fatally wounding him,” Bungei said.

The police boss also revealed that another member of the public was injured in the drama which is the very first to ever happen in the country.

Both the magistrate and the other victim were rushed to hospital in serious condition in the events that unfolded today at 2pm.

The Office of the Chief Registrar of the Judiciary has said it is saddened by the unfortunate shooting incident.

In a statement, the Chief Registrar of the Judiciary said the Police Officer is married to the suspect adding, “During an open court session earlier today, the Magistrate cancelled the bond for an accused person who had jumped bond and had failed to offer satisfactory explanations for jumping bond. Immediately this decision was pronounced, a person shot at the magistrate and injured her on the hip.”

She urged for calm from all court users as law enforcement agencies further investigate the incident.
