Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has called upon non-local teachers in Northern Kenya to return to their duty stations, citing improved security conditions in the region.
Speaking during the 29th graduation ceremony at the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE), Machogu assured that the government would provide the necessary security to enable teachers across the country to fulfill their roles without hindrance.
“Previously, non-local teachers in Wajir, Mandera, and Garissa Counties had initiated a strike due to persistent insecurity, causing many to flee their work locations in July, citing safety concerns.,” he stated.
Machogu further added that their appeals to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to transfer them to safer areas had been unsuccessful.
“Frustration had led some teachers to stage protests at the TSC Headquarters in Upperhill, Nairobi, resulting in the interdiction of 60 out of 129 teachers by the commission, on grounds of disrupting the education system,” he added.
Additionally, the National Assembly Education Committee, led by Tinderet MP Julius Melly, had called on TSC to reinstate the interdicted teachers, criticizing the disciplinary actions as unwise and inhumane.
With these developments, the call by the CS for teachers to return to Northern Kenya carries significant weight as the government strives to restore stability in the region.
