Machogu urges KICD to complete development of Sign Language curriculum

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has urged the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) to complete the development of a curriculum on Kenya Sign Language interpretation that has been pending for eight years now.

Speaking during the 29th graduation ceremony at Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE), Machogu also urged KICD to develop a curriculum as directed by Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms.

He noted that the government is committed to support the education of special needs children hence it will support KISE put up a parental empowerment centre.

The CS, who also flagged off a consignment of assistive devices to special schools, commended KISE for being in the right direction on matters of special needs and disabilities.

KISE Director Dr Norman Kiogora noted with pride that the graduands have been equipped with the necessary skills and attitude to serve persons with special needs and disabilities.

KISE Council Chairman Habat Sheikh Abdi commended the Ministry of Education (MoE), TSC and other stakeholders for supporting the institute carry out its mandate.

In collaboration with MoE, the institute will upgrade ICT infrastructure, revamp and upgrade assistive devices production workshop and equip the psycho educational assessment centre.

The graduation ceremony was graced by Her Excellency Mama Sarah Cheruiyot Samoei and Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang among other guests.

A total of 871 graduands were awarded certificates in Kenyan Sign Language and Diplomas in Special Needs Education.
