Public schools countrywide will receive course books by the end of the current term two, Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Education Ezekiel Machogu has said.
Machogu announced this while responding to a question from Samburu North MP Dominic Letipila at the National Assembly on Wednesday, June 7, 2023; who demanded to know why schools like Uaso Girls Secondary school, Nkaroni Girls high school, Tipito Girls and two other schools in Samburu East constituency were yet to receive course books.
In his defense, the CS said that public schools were last supplied with books in 2018 and the affected schools are those that were established after 2018 and the supply finished.
“The Ministry is in the process of undertaking a replacement to ensure that all schools are supplied with books before the end of this term,” he said.
He added: “The affected schools will receive the books before the end of this term and not only in Samburu East but also many other schools in other counties.”
At the same time, Machogu said that only primary schools girls will benefit from the free sanitary pads programme by the government as the funds allocated for the same is not sufficient.
“Members, as you are aware, the funds given to us for purchase of sanitary pads are not enough as much as we would like to cover secondary schools also. It is because of that that we are forced to cater for primary school girls for now,” said the CS.
Machogu requested the parliament to allocate more funds to enable the Ministry to cater for secondary school girls as well.
In the 2022/2023 financial year, the government allocated Ksh470 million for the purchase of sanitary pads.
