The Cabinet Secretary (CS) of Education Ezekiel Machogu has acknowledged the partnership with Governments of Germany and Finland fostering opportunities for engaging, exchanging ideas, and collectively shaping the future of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Kenya.

In an address at the National TVET Conference 2023, Machogu highlighted ongoing transformative reforms in the TVET sector.

He noted that these reforms aim to revitalize the TVET landscape, aligning it with the dynamic demands of the labor market.

“The Presidential Working Party on Education Reform, appointed by the President, played a pivotal role in shaping these reforms through extensive stakeholder engagement and public participation,” the CS stated.

He further mentioned that one key recommendation from the Working Party focused on the periodic review of the TVET curriculum to ensure its relevance to the job market.

“Emphasizing the importance of strong linkages between TVET institutions and the industry, the Working Party highlighted the role of industry engagement in creating a responsive and effective education system,” Machogu underscored.

He further said that another significant recommendation involved the recognition of prior learning, acknowledging and certifying skills acquired through industry experience.

Machogu also reported on the earnest implementation of these reforms, including the hiring and retooling of trainers and a shift in the curriculum towards practical-based training.

Additionally, he highlighted the revival of the TVET Curriculum Development, Assessment, and Certification Council (TVET-CDACC) and its crucial role in designing learner-centered and industry-driven TVET curricula.

Looking forward, the CS mentioned the adoption of a policy on Recognition of Prior Learning, a milestone that would contribute to a more inclusive and flexible education system.

“These reforms were more than policy and legal actions; they represented the building blocks of a brighter future for the TVET sub-sector and the nation at large,” he emphasized.

Machogu highlighted that the conference, bringing together stakeholders from the TVET sector and industry, provides a platform for dialogue and idea exchange.

He expressed optimism about the discussions shaping the ongoing reforms and creating a skilled and versatile workforce capable of facing the challenges of the present and the future.

Also in attendance were the German Ambassador Sebastian Groth, Finnish Ambassador Pirkka Tapiola, The Principal Secretary, State Department for Technical, Vocational Education and Training, Dr. Esther Muoria and other Development Partners.
