Machogu hosts Nigerian varsity commission, discuss interests, solutions to challenges

The Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Ezekiel Machogu hosted delegates from the National University Commission of Nigeria led by Prof. Abubakar Rasheed after the later paid a courtesy call where collaborations between the two countries in getting solutions to common problems affecting higher education in Africa was discussed.

“We are currently in the process of transiting from the 8-4-4 education system to the competency based curriculum system of education unveiled in 2017 which provides continuous assessment for learners in their skills and competences.

“We also want to assure you that our certificates attain international recognised standards and enable graduates acquire the necessary skills and competences to practice worldwide,” Machogu said.

Prof. Rasheed, while briefing the CS on the education system in Nigeria, said that they are in Kenya to engage with several higher education stakeholders in selected institutions to compare notes and identify areas of common interest that can strengthen ties between Kenya and Nigeria in education.

At the same time, Machogu acknowledged the setbacks of university funding and governance as he pledged that the government is in the process of developing a framework to ensure sustainability in universities across the country.

In attendance was; Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, the Principal Secretary for Higher Education and Research, the Chief Executive Officer Commission for University Education (CUE) Prof. Mike Kuria, CUE Chairman Prof. Chacha Nyaigoti and Director for Higher Education Dairus Ogutu Mogaka.
