Education CS Ezekiel Machogu has urged parents to ensure children under 5 years old and expectant mothers sleep under mosquito nets to protect against the heightened threat of mosquito-borne diseases during the wet season.

Speaking during distribution of food and non-food items to families affected by floods in Homabay and Migori counties,  Machogu encouraged the youth to engage in community service by clearing bushes and draining stagnant water to eliminate potential mosquito breeding grounds.

He underscored the significance of such preventative measures, discouraging idleness and substance abuse among the youth.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to assisting 4,240 affected households across the two counties.

“The government has urged residents residing in low-lying areas to relocate to higher ground, minimizing the risks associated with flooding,” he stated.

Furthermore, the Minister, accompanied by government officials, Specifically, 2,300 households in Nyatike, Rachuonyo North, and Suba South in Homabay County received aid, with additional relief reaching Nyatike Constituency in Migori County.

Assuring residents of ongoing support, especially for the education of affected children, the Minister announced plans to collaborate with the county government in facilitating school fees for affected families in the coming year.

This relief effort comes two weeks after political leaders from Homabay County urged swift humanitarian assistance for flood victims.

The government’s prompt response was acknowledged by leaders such as Peter Kaluma, MO for Homabay town Constituency, and Karachuonyo MP Odipo Kuome.

The latter expressed gratitude for the quick support, particularly benefiting those in Kamser, Nyakongo, Central Karachuonyo, and Koriang.

Nominated Senator Beatrice Ogolla Ogoll appealed to both the National and County governments to find housing solutions for those whose homes were destroyed, with many seeking refuge in local hospitals and schools.
