Machakos town Technical and Vocational College (TVC) principal Dr Timothy Kilonzo has encouraged parents to enrol their children on technical institutes to acquire vital skills to change their lives.

Speaking to Education News in his office, Kilonzo said skills have benefitted many students, giving an example of a first-year student from the same college who is currently in Ireland after competing in Kenya in a program dubbed ‘mkulima majuu’

“We nominated three of our teachers, and they are heading to Germany after competing in the expansion of green competencies, a collaboration program between Germany and the Kenyan government. Our trainers are among the 24 who qualified to proceed to Germany from 30 institutions for a three-week, fully sponsored program. You see, skills can take you far. They will become Trainer of Trainers upon coming back to Kenya on green energy issues to mitigate climate change,” Kilonzo said.

He extended special thanks to the German government and the ministry for providing three of their trainers with such opportunities. Although the competition was tough, they succeeded.

Kilonzo, who is heading one of the newest TVCs established last year and currently has 500 students in the region, said he has high hopes that the college will grow bigger. He encourages other principals in new institutions not to give up but to offer their best. The rest will fall in place before they know.

He thanked the area MP, Caleb Mule, for helping push for a borehole, adding that the school is already doing drip irrigation and supplying water even to the community.

“He has also pushed for student hostels, which are in the pipeline to transform the school fully. We call upon the government to help tarmac the road, which will fully open the area to developments,” Kilonzo said.
