Machakos varsity needs up to Ksh5B to upgrade to global levels, says DG

Machakos University requires more funding to upgrade the infrastructure to international standards, Machakos Deputy Governor (DG) Francis Mwangangi has said.

Estimating the amount required to upgrade it to international standards at Ksh5 billion, the DG asked the Machakos Town Constituency MP Caleb Mule to lobby for funding to give the infrastructure a facelift.

“We are lucky to have Machakos University here. The university requires 2 to 5 billion shillings to upgrade its infrastructure to the level of world renowned universities such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the USA but the leadership is not lobbying for this,” said Mwangangi.

He was speaking outside Machakos Cathedral after witnessing a confirmation ceremony for Catholic faithfuls presided over by Bishop Norman King’oo yesterday, where he also praised the former MP Dr Victor Munyaka for ensuring that the university was granted a charter.

During the National Assembly Committee sitting in Machakos last week, it was revealed that Ksh10 million had been allocated to Machakos University in the 2024/2025 budget proposal.

Bishop King’oo said academic standards in the county were falling based on last year’s KCSE results and called on leaders to address the issue as it could end up cutting down the number of professionals in future.

He asked leaders to suspend politicking and instead come together for such causes.
