Schools across Machakos County have posted notable improvements in the latest KCSE results, with several institutions recording higher mean scores and stronger university transition rates.
A spot check by Education News found celebrations in multiple schools as principals confirmed positive deviations compared to last year’s performance.
Matungulu Girls High School raised its mean score to 8.13 from 7.6, with Chief Principal Juliana Musaba reporting that 83 per cent of candidates qualified for university admission and 48 students opted for diploma courses. Kathiani Girls High School registered one of the county’s standout results, improving its mean to 8.675 from 8.1 in 2024 and projecting a 91 per cent university transition. Chief Principal Damaris Munyao credited consistency and teamwork for the sustained gains.
Machakos School also recorded a strong uplift, moving from a mean score of 7.7 to 8.4. Chief Principal Benson Manoo said 503 students qualified for university admission, reflecting the school’s improved academic trajectory. Machakos Girls High School edged up from 7.2 to 7.5, while Masinga Girls High School rose from 6.3 to 6.8, consolidating steady progress across the girls’ schools.

In one of the most striking turnarounds, Mwala Boys High School jumped from a mean score of 4.9 to 6.4, a leap that surprised many in the county and signalled renewed momentum.
Vyulya Girls High School posted a mean of 8.1, up from 6.7, and reported a 91 per cent university transition rate, placing it among the top improvers.
Other schools also posted gains: Masii Boys moved from 5.7 to 6.79, Mumbuni Boys High School rose from 5.59 to 6.9, and Kabaa High School improved from 7.45 to 7.85. Collectively, the results point to a broad-based uplift across Machakos, with schools citing disciplined preparation, stronger academic support, and sustained teamwork as drivers of the improved outcomes.
