Machakos residents up in arms over learners leaving school to brew alcohol

Matungulu DCC Evelyn Wekesa leads chiefs and other leaders in pouring down hundreds of litres of illicit brew nabbed on Tuesday.

Residents in Ngomeni and Syanthi are up in arms over increased cases of truancy among learners who skip school to go brew illicit alcohol.

Speaking during a meeting in Ngomeni hosted by the county government of Machakos, the locals noted that children were refusing to go to school and were instead, joining their parents in brewing chang’aa and kangara.

A resident said that the learners choose to work in the brewing dens and get money instead of attending school.

“This area is filled with dropouts who can’t think further than the brewing dens. Parents have failed to ensure that their children finish school,” she said.

Matungulu Deputy County Commissioner Evelyn Wekesa urged parents to instill in their children the importance of education.

She cautioned them and assured of regular crackdowns to abolish the illicit brew business in the area.

Wekesa was accompanied by NACADA Eastern Region Coordinator Alex Njeru who added that no one found brewing will be spared.

“Be warned. Our eyes are on you. We won’t sit and watch as you destroy a whole village,” said Njeru.
