Girls in Machakos county have been urged to shed off the fear of mathematics and embrace the subject with confidence as it holds the key to unlocking many career opportunities in the modern world.
Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) Machakos chairperson, Stephen Kavuvu, challenged the girls to approach mathematics with a positive attitude, emphasizing that success in the subject is not determined by gender but by determination and consistent effort.
Kavuvu, who is also the principal of Maiuni Secondary, noted that despite great strides in girls’ education, many female learners still shy away from mathematics and science-based subjects due to long-held stereotypes.
“The notion that mathematics is a subject for boys is outdated and misleading. Girls are equally capable, and we have seen many of them excel in STEM fields when given the right support,” he said.

He pointed out that in the digital era, proficiency in mathematics is no longer optional for students who want to compete globally.
Kavuvu urged girls to rise above societal discouragement and view mathematics as a stepping stone to prestigious careers in engineering, finance, technology, and medicine.
“Mathematics opens doors. The future belongs to those who embrace it fearlessly. Girls, don’t lock yourselves out,” he told the students.
Kavuvu also urged teachers to make mathematics fun and relatable by incorporating practical examples during lessons.
He encouraged teachers in Machakos to set up mentorship programs where girls can learn from successful women in STEM careers.
