The County Government of Machakos has instituted measures to exit from the payroll 121 staff members found to have used fake certificates to gain employment.

County Secretary Dr Muya Ndambuki said the fraud was unearthed after the county administration requested the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) to authenticate 5018 certificates of staff members out of which 121 were found not to be genuine.

He said there was indication that the number may go up due to cases still under investigation by the same body.

“In February 2024, we requested the Kenya National Examination Council to authenticate the certificates of 5018 staff members. Upon verification, copies of 121 staff members were found not to be genuine,” said Dr Ndambuki who made the announcement at the Governor’s office on Monday June 24 in the company of Devolution County Executive Committee Member Joel Nzomo, County Public Service Chief Officer Lawrence Maingi and County Public Service Board Chairman Albanus Mutisya among other officers.

He said the culprits were persons who never deserved to have been in the public service and had unduly bled the county resources which should have gone into serving the people of Machakos.

“I direct the Chief Officer, Public Service within two days to initiate the process of exiting these persons from the employment and institute recovery of any and all earnings by these individuals as provided in law,” said Dr Ndambuki.

He said in liaison with individual universities and the Kenya National Qualifications Authority the county was verifying degree and diploma certificates in order to rid the public service of such characters.

“I dare say the same process will be repeated. A time has come to rid the public service of evil,” added Dr Ndambuki.
