Machakos County Chief Officer in the Governor’s Office, Charles Mutinda, has called on class teachers to take full responsibility for students’ academic outcomes, saying they hold the power to revolutionize performance in schools.
Speaking during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Kinyui Girls High School, Mutinda emphasized that a class teacher’s close interaction with students makes them the key driver of results.
He added that the teacher is aware of their students’ strengths and weakness thus being able to know where to improve and maintain.
“A class teacher determines the outcome of a student. If a student fails, the blame should not fall on the principal but on the class teacher. You are the OCS in that classroom, shaping these kids and setting them on the right path,” Mutinda stated.
“The principal has too much workload and cannot control over 700 students and ensure they pass but a class teacher can do that effortlessly ,”he added.

He praised Kinyui Girls for attaining a mean score of 5.7 in the recent KCSE exams and challenged both teachers and students to aim for their 7.1 target.
Among the virtues he asked trachers and learners to have are time management and hard work.
“The target is achievable with discipline and proper time management. Students must learn to save time and invest it in studies,” he added, quoting John 13:17, “Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.”
Mutinda further urged schools to adopt a Defence Before Attack (DBA) approach, where educators first ensure students retain or improve on the grades they joined with before demanding more from them.
He also appealed to parents, especially fathers, to be present in their children’s education journey.
“Availability is better than ability. When fathers show up in schools, it sends a powerful message to their children that they are supported,” he said.
In addition, Mutinda promised to push for the drilling of a borehole in Kinyui, a pledge made by Governor Wavinya Ndeti, to ensure a better learning environment.
