Healthcare workers in Machakos County who have served for a period of three years are eligible to apply for study leave in order to advance their knowledge of their areas of specialisation, County Executive Member in charge of Health Dr Daniel Yumbya has announced.

Study leave is one of the contentious issues which had caused the countrywide doctors’ strike and is at the centre of the ongoing national strike by clinical officers, and lab technicians.

Dr Yumbya who spoke in Machakos after hosting journalists to a luncheon said Governor Wavinya Ndeti had already granted the wish to healthcare professionals in the county and there was no need for them to engage in the national strike spearheaded by their unions.

He said the study leave was available to the healthcare professionals provided that the studies they pursued were beneficial to the people.

“We have had the doctors’ strike which has been resolved but we still have an ongoing strike of clinical officers and lab technician but I want to ask them to resume duty since here in Machakos Governor Wavinya has already sorted the issues which have caused the national strike including promotions and the granting of study leave,” said Dr Yumbya.

H added said the strike had not paralyzed service delivery in the county as some staff were working in shifts.

Some 422 healthcare professionals in Machakos were promoted last year.
