Mabati Rolling Mills (MRM) in partnership with the Association of Construction Managers of Kenya (ACMK) has launched the 2023 Annual Student Competition aimed at up-skilling students to gain relevant industry competencies.

The ACMK competition, which will run for six weeks, is aimed at engaging Construction Management students across Kenyan Universities by challenging them to apply knowledge acquired academically into solving real time project issues.

The competition is focused on sustainable development and will see students invited to share essays, write and present oral reports, and finally culminate in an award ceremony.

Currently it is only open to students from the University of Nairobi, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Kenyatta University, Technical University of Kenya and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University.

Speaking during the launch of the competition at MRM headquarters, James Mburu, Chair of the ACMK Students Competition Committee said that the essence of the competition is to prepare students for the real world in the construction sector.

Mburu further said that they already have 35 participants from the five universities and are in the process of appointing judges, some of whom will come from MRM and others from ACMK.

He said that MRM has had a long-standing commitment to supporting education and innovation within the construction field.

“We are excited to continue partnering with ACMK on this initiative. We believe in the potential of the next generation of construction professionals and this competition will enable them to showcase projects that have used sustainable innovation including MRM’s building solutions,” said Rittah Okello, MRM Marketing Manager.

The winning group will receive an award of Ksh30,000 and a first position certificate for each group member while the second will get Ksh20,000 and a second position certificate for each group member.

The winners who will hold the third position will be awarded Ksh15,000 and a third position certificate for each member while other participants from the remaining successful entries will receive a certificate of participation.

ACMK holds this competition annually as a way of contributing to the student’s body of knowledge and bridging the gap between class theory and practical experience.
