Maasai Mara University has been recognised for its outstanding contribution to the fight against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Narok County.
The institution was awarded a Certificate of Recognition during the Anti-FGM Awards, held as part of the Narok Gender Technical Working Group (GTWG) End-Year Party at Olive Hotel in Narok.
The award highlights the university’s sustained commitment to promoting gender equity, protecting the rights of girls and women, and supporting community-led initiatives aimed at ending harmful cultural practices.

Through advocacy, research, community outreach and partnerships with government and civil society actors, Maasai Mara University has played a key role in raising awareness on the dangers of FGM and championing alternative rites of passage.
The certificate was received on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor by Dr. Karani Onyiko, the Director of Gender, Equity and Culture, alongside Mrs. Ruth Sipitiek, Head of the Section for Counselling and HIV Testing and Services. They reaffirmed the university’s dedication to strengthening prevention efforts and supporting survivors through education, counselling and referral services.
The Anti-FGM Awards brought together stakeholders from government departments, community-based organisations, development partners and local leaders to celebrate progress made in the fight against FGM in Narok County and to renew commitments towards its total eradication.
Maasai Mara University reiterated its pledge to continue working with partners to advance gender equality, safeguard human rights and promote inclusive development across the region.
