Low enrolment plagues TTCs upgrade to diploma courses

Teachers training colleges heads have decried low fees as well as a huge drop in the enrolment of students after the government gave a stun directive on P1 teacher admission.

In Bungoma, a good number of private institutions have remained closed as students flock to TVET institutions.

Addressing the press, Principal West Kenya Teachers college, Patrick Nandasaba said currently the college has a student enrolment of 100 students compared to the initial figure of over 400 students.

He revealed that due to the government’s directives to scrap the P1 programme, over 10 tutors were forced to hang gloves.

Nandasaba called on the government through the Ministry of Education to hasten the re-registration of the P1 teacher course that was highly relied upon by many institutions.

”If the government will continue with such programmes then the country will face inadequacy in P1 teachers thus affecting the education system,” he said.

He blamed the government for failing to follow the right procedure in training the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) teachers, saying they were taken through a partial training which a good number of them did not capture well.

Nandasaba attributed poor fees payment to the raging Covid-19 pandemic which has left many jobless.
