Locals in Abothuguci Central Ward in Central Imenti Constituency have been urged to construct hostels in a bid to accommodate the rising population of teachers and students of Mukiria Technical Training Institute.

The college principal Michael Maina regretted that many students and staff lack proper accommodation in the locality and are forced to travel long distance in order to rent houses.

Mukiria TTI principal Michael Maina and his deputy Karwitha Nkarinchia when they spoke to the press at the college.

He said this inconveniences them since they waste a lot of time commuting to and from the institution.

Maina challenged residents who own land in the locality to rise to the occasion by investing in modern and sufficient rental houses, noting that the national government is no longer keen on accommodation of students.

Speaking to the media at the institution, the principal said the student population currently stands at 4,000 and it is expected to rise after the admission of new students next year.

“One of the greatest challenges we are currently facing is the acute shortage of accommodation for our students and teachers. We need hostels for our students because many come from far and don’t have a place to sleep,” he said.

He said the institution is set to start income generating projects in a bid to supplement the funds it gets from fees collection and urged students to apply for bursary funds.

The institute deputy principal Karwitha Nkarinchia said the student population has grown tremendously due to the institution’s intense training coupled with valuable and marketable courses.

She urged parents to enroll their children at the institution, noting that TVET’s are the future of the country.
