Locals of Kakrao ward in Suna East Constituency, Migori County have blamed elected leaders over poor road networks in the area, especially those leading to various learning institutions.

The community and parents of St. Augustine Kakrao Mixed Secondary School want the leaders to move swiftly and take necessary measures in maintenance of the road leading to the school situated off the Migori-Kisii highway before the national exams commence.

Speaking to Education News, the locals noted that the one kilometer road is impassable because of the deep gulleys dug by rushing rain water.

“Both primary and secondary schools and the market center have been completely cut off as the maintenance stopped years ago,” said Henry Onyango, a community member.

Onyango revealed that the School bus had also been grounded due to the poor roads. All the teachers and visitors who own cars trying to access the schools are forced to always leave their vehicles next to the main road.

The locals blamed the area Member of Parliament Hon. Junet Muhammed for failing to ensure the roads leading to the learning institutions are maintained and in good condition to ease access to the school. They also blamed the legislator for failing to drill boreholes within the school compound for the learners forcing them to always fetch water from the river or from nearby water sources.

Parents have now called on the Member of Parliament to consider drilling of a borehole at the school, saying it is not safe for their children to always cross the ever busy road in search for water.

Enika Ajenda, a parent said the students always slip when they are from fetching water for use at the learning institution with some of them even breaking a leg.

“We are also grappling with water shortage and this is the road we share with students. It is a looming disaster,” she said.

Mike Omondi, a Boda-boda rider said the road has brought them losses as they are forced to change spare parts for their bikes frequently, adding that it has affecting several businesses in the area.
