Lobby wants measures introduced to curb scholarship, bursary fraud in schools

By Kevin Odera

Usawa Agenda has proposed that the government should create an institution tasked with managing bursaries and scholarship distribution in order to reduce cases of funds embezzlement

The not-for-profit organization presented the proposal to the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms stating that they identified Jomo Kenyatta Foundation as the appropriate and the most qualified organization to take on the responsibility.

The organization’s Executive Director, Emmanuel Mayasa noted that with the implementation of the proposal, the issue of embezzlement will be a thing of the past.

“The government should come up with one national institution with decentralized structures that go down to the ward level,” Manyasa added.

He reported that the ward level should be responsible for identifying children from poor backgrounds.

“The ward level will work with communities to ascertain their level of need and recommend the cases to the higher levels,” he said.

Manyasa added that the team will make public the information about the disbursed money in the county, constituency and ward level.
