Little known gentle giant storms the national stage in Music

Music trainer Dominic Muthoka with his team of music which made it national

Kambu Primary and Junior Secondary School stormed the national stage in Music festivals to compete with the seasoned players who have been routine actors on that level.

They surprised many: with a population of 389 and 18 teachers, there is nothing special about it to make it stand out.

Yet they overcame every challenge to take three items to the nationals.

“Here we don’t joke. We had 33 items at the sub-county level, 23 at the county, 7 at the regional and three made it to national. We balance class and co-curricular activities since we want to produce all round pupils,” trainer Dominic Muthoka said.

The trainer added that the team of 47 pupils made the school proud with one vernacular verse (class 1203) titled Syana Nisuviwe, a solo piece (class 105), and an own choice (class 202).

Muthoka noted that music is the field that they use to market the school, praising the management and parents for their invaluable support.

Muthoka, whose interest in Music began in 2008, says that he has taken his pupils to the national several times. He also trains secondary schools, many of whom have made it to the top level too.

He credits the pupils for their positive attitude towards instructions.

“The pupils take the training positively and that’s why we have been able to reach highest level,” Muthoka said.

Commenting on their achievements, the head teacher Eliud Kisilu said the school is a powerhouse in many co-curricular activities, including the scouting movement.

He is very optimistic that they are going to make the school an all-round institution in the sub-county and beyond.

“We call our school gentle giant because of what it does when it comes to co-curriculum. We try to balance every activity with class work as well,” Kisilu said.

The school is located in Kibwezi Sub-county of Makueni.
