Litein High moves to quell social media rumours after student unrest

Structures at Litein High School left burned and damaged following the recent student unrest that disrupted learning.

Litein High School in Kericho County has issued a public notice urging parents, students and stakeholders to disregard unverified information circulating on social media regarding the school’s situation following recent unrest.

In a statement dated September 24, 2025 and signed by the board of management on behalf of the chief principal, the school acknowledged that it had become aware of multiple reports online about steps being taken in the aftermath of the disturbances

The statement emphasised that only official communication released through the school’s channels should be trusted.

“Our attention has been drawn from the information circulating in social media about steps taken after unrest,” the notice reads in part.

The notice added:“We shall keep the public updated on any official developments. Until then, we kindly request stakeholders to disregard misleading information and rely only on information released through our school official communication channels.”

The move comes days after unrest at the school disrupting learning and forced administrators to take emergency measures on Sunday evening.

The parents and the public have expressed concern over the safety of learners, especially candidates preparing for their national examinations in just a few weeks’ time.

Sources within the education sector say the ministry of education and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) are closely monitoring the situation at Litein High School and other institutions in the region to ensure that disruptions do not interfere with the academic calendar.

Similar incidents have in the past led to early closure of schools or transfer of candidates to other centres — a scenario parents are keen to avoid.

Education officials and stakeholders have welcomed the school communication saying it promotes transparency and combats misinformation at a time when speculation can easily inflame tensions.

Parents have been advised to remain calm and to liaise directly with the school administration for accurate updates.

The board of management has promised that more detailed communication will be shared once consultations with government agencies and security organs are concluded.
