Litein Boys rampage: Uncollected KCSE certificates burnt in administration block blaze

Litein Boys students torched the administration block, destroying uncollected KCSE certificates and sparking nationwide condemnation.

Uncollected Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificates were among several critical documents destroyed when students went on a rampage at Litein Boys High School on Sunday night.

School officials confirmed that most of the burnt certificates belonged to last year’s candidates and were destroyed in the blaze.

“We have lost a significant number of uncollected KCSE certificates, which were in storage in the administration block,” a school official said on condition of anonymity.

The students, who reportedly went on a violent rampage after being denied the opportunity to watch the much-anticipated English Premier League (EPL) match between Arsenal and Manchester City, also destroyed computers and other essential administrative equipment.

Disturbing videos circulating on social media show masked students wielding crude weapons during the chaos. The school has since been closed indefinitely.

“This kind of indiscipline is unacceptable. Burning school property over a football match is not only criminal but deeply worrying,” said a concerned parent.

The violent incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with former Roads Minister Franklin Bett calling for a full investigation into the matter.

“We need a task force to investigate what triggered such extreme behaviour and ensure accountability thoroughly,” Bett said. “This is not just a school issue—it reflects deeper societal problems that need urgent attention.”

Education officials visited the school to assess the damage and determine the next steps, including possible disciplinary actions and rebuilding efforts.

More than 50 students from the School have been arrested following the violent unrest that led to the burning of the school’s administration block on Sunday night and are set to be arraigned in court tomorrow.
