Legislator advocates fewer quality secondary schools

By Erick Nyayiera

Rarieda MP Otiende Amolo  has asked the Ministry of Education to suspend any approvals for the establishment of additional secondary schools in region.
Dr. Otiende said the region is already littered with many secondary schools some of which have enrolled less than twenty pupils since establishment.
Speaking during the disbursement of Sh17.2 million in cheques to various schools in Rarieda at Pala Kobong’ Secondary School, Otiende disclosed that currently there are over 50 secondary institutions in the sub county which are sufficient to meet the educational needs of the locals.
He observed that many clans in the area are seeking to have secondary schools in their villages, a move which has continually strained the meager resources in the education sector.
The legislator stated that if the trend is allowed to continue, the newly established schools will lack not only required number of students but also teachers to work in the schools.
Otiende observed that Pala Kobong’ Secondary School which has less than thirty students should be the last secondary school to be established in the region since there is no genuine need for another school.
He said that the education stakeholders in the region should now focus on establishing tertiary intuitions which the region lacks.
The MP revealed that there is no single tertiary intuition in the area and already talks are underway to establish Technical Training Institution, Teachers Training College alongside a Kenya Medical Training College which is under construction.
